About Wisconsin Environment
Who we are
Wisconsin Environment is a citizen-based environmental advocacy project of Environment America. We believe there’s something special about Wisconsin — something worth protecting and preserving for future generations. Whether it’s the light shimmering off Lake Michigan, our thousands of lakes and streams, or our countless parks and forests, Wisconsin’s natural wonders enrich our lives in countless ways.
Yet the places we love and the environmental values we share are too often threatened by powerful industries, short-sighted politicians and more. Defending our environment requires independent research, tough-minded advocacy, and spirited grassroots action. That’s the idea behind Wisconsin Environment. Together with thousands of supporters from all walks of life, we take the kind of action that wins tangible results for our environment.

What we do
Funded by supporters like you, we research the challenges confronting our environment and educate the public about what’s at stake. Through our research reports, news conferences, interviews with reporters, op-ed pieces, letters to the editor, and more, we raise awareness of environmental issues and promote sensible solutions. Our canvassers meet people where they are — in public places or door-to-door — raising awareness, recruiting new supporters and activists, and raising funds to support our work.
When decisions are being made about our environment, our elected officials hear plenty from oil companies, developers and other powerful interests. We make the case for our environment and help people like you make your voice heard — using methods like petitions, emails, letters and phone calls, all delivered to the right people just when it matters most.

Putting your support to work
Wisconsin Environment has a proven track record of winning real results for our environment.
- Winning strong protections for our inland lakes. More of Wisconsin’s lakes will be clean, safe and free of harmful algae blooms for summers to come, since Wisconsin Environment won our 2010 campaign to establish strong new rules to protect our lakes from the runoff pollution that causes algae blooms.
- E-cycling for Wisconsin. Our state has long been a leader with recycling programs for cans, bottles and paper, and now we’re a leader in “e-cycling,” too. Thousands of Wisconsinites joined our call for a program to safely recycle old TVs and laptop computers — instead of letting them pile up in landfills where toxic chemicals can seep into groundwater.
- Keeping mercury out of our streams and rivers. Our waterways are better protected from mercury pollution after we won a state policy to reduce mercury emissions from coal-fired power plants by 90 percent. Since then, we’ve kept the pressure on by researching and publicizing the plants’ progress.
