Madison  — This afternoon, Gov. Tony Evers joined Sen. Tammy Baldwin in calling on the federal government to designate hundreds of underwater square miles as the Wisconsin-Lake Michigan National Marine Sanctuary.

In response, Wisconsin Environment state director Megan Severson released the following statement:

“America’s not just beautiful for spacious skies, amber waves of grain and purple mountain majesty. Our beloved bodies of water also make America beautiful. With that in mind, Governor Evers’ decision to support the Wisconsin-Lake Michigan National Marine Sanctuary represents a great step towards preserving even more of our state’s most important natural heritage: Lake Michigan.

Beyond its cultural value, this sanctuary will help preserve the natural beauty of the Great Lakes and provide Wisconsin’s residents more opportunity for recreation and research.

With the support of Governor Evers and Sen. Baldwin, we hope Wisconsin will soon see a sanctuary on its shores.”
